Emergency Shelter (Future Plan)

  • Due to increasing number of street kids, their families and other homeless people in our community today, Metro Street Focus Organization intends to establish an emergency shelter and resource centre to be equipped with beds, showers, where we can provide temporary housing, meals, supportive counseling, referrals (medical, housing, vocational skills, employment, treatment, etc.) to community agencies, education on health issues and counseling. Street youth will be encouraged to learn useful skills that will reintegrate them into the society.

Vocational Education

  • Metro Street Focus Organization recognizes the need to enhance, strengthen and structure the lives of the street youth so that they can become independent, healthy, socially responsible and useful members of the society where they were once social dependents. To accomplish this, the organization intends to establish a training/resource centre within the shelter home, which will be equipped with computers, teaching aides, books, audio visual equipment and professionally qualified staff to teach them some useful and employable skills that will help reintegrate them into the society. While on this program the organization will arrange a co-op program with some industries and offices where they will learn basic filing, offices procedures, assembling of products and other work related experience that will prepare them for challenges ahead on the job market. The training and experience in this program will be useful and prepare them for employment when they graduate.
  • Each candidate will be awarded a certificate upon completion of such program.

Transportation

  • Research has shown that street youth and other homeless people lack access to public transportation due to financial constraint, thereby exposing them to excessive walking often with inadequate footwear. This increases the need for emergency transportation services for street youth and other socially isolated persons in the city of Toronto. To address this problem, Metro Street Focus Organization has acquired two vehicles (Dodge Caravan Van and Crown Victoria - Police cruiser type) for its street outreach services. Another purpose for these Vans is to enable street youth, their families and other homeless persons to be transported to drop-in centres, medical appointments, job search and housing support. The vans will also be used for the distribution of items such as food, clothing, blankets, personal hygiene items, condoms, etc. The organization intends to purchase more vans for its operation as soon as more funds become available to do so.
